North Macedonia: Electricity exchange sees strong volume growth in May 2026 with higher prices

In May 2026, the North Macedonia day-ahead electricity exchange recorded a significant increase in trading activity, with total electricity volume reaching 125,210.5 MWh. This represents a strong rise of 45% compared to May 2025, when 86,321 MWh were traded, as well as a 14% increase compared to the previous month, indicating continued growth in market participation and liquidity.

The market operator MEMO reported that the average market-clearing price for May 2026 stood at 89.68 euros/MWh, which is 2.1% higher month-on-month. This modest increase in prices reflects relatively stable but slightly tightening market conditions despite higher traded volumes.

On a daily basis, the average trading volume reached approximately 4,039 MWh, further confirming the active participation of market players throughout the month. Meanwhile, the peak electricity price for May was recorded at 49.9 euros/MWh, showing lower volatility in peak pricing compared to overall market averages.

The North Macedonian electricity exchange, established in May 2023, continues to develop steadily, with May 2026 results highlighting consistent year-on-year expansion in trading activity and gradual maturation of the power market structure.
