Europe: Solar rises while wind shows mixed performance across major power markets

During the week of June 22, solar photovoltaic generation increased across most major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. Germany recorded the strongest rise at 16%, while Spain saw only a marginal increase of 0.5%, although both markets extended their growth trend for a second consecutive week. France also posted a gain of 2.5%, marking its third week of continuous growth. In contrast, Italy and Portugal experienced declines of 5.1% and 22%, respectively, reversing the upward trend seen in the previous two weeks.

Throughout the same period, both Germany and Spain set new solar production records. On June 24, Germany achieved its highest solar photovoltaic output ever recorded for a June day, reaching 489 GWh, which also represents the second-highest daily level in its history. Spain reached an all-time solar record on June 26, producing 267 GWh in a single day, highlighting the continued expansion of solar capacity and favorable weather conditions across the Iberian Peninsula.

Looking ahead, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects that during the week of June 29, solar production will rise in Italy, while Germany and Spain are likely to experience declines in output. At the same time, wind energy showed a different pattern during the last week of June, with broad increases across most European markets. Portugal led with a sharp rise of 54%, followed by France at 32% and Spain at 23%, while Italy and Germany recorded their second consecutive weekly declines of 10% and 40%, respectively.

For the first week of July, forecasts indicate a general rebound in wind energy production across the main European electricity markets under analysis, suggesting a shift back toward stronger wind conditions after the recent period of mixed performance, AleaSoft reports.
