Europe: Solar output falls while wind energy surges in early June 2026

In the week of June 1, solar photovoltaic energy production declined across major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. The German market recorded the steepest drop of 25%, followed closely by France with a 24% decrease. In contrast, the Iberian Peninsula showed milder reductions, with Portugal down 4.6% and Spain down 4.7%, while Italy registered a 7.7% decline in solar generation.

Despite the weekly downturn, June 1 marked record-breaking solar output in parts of Southern Europe. The Iberian Peninsula reached all-time highs for a June day, with Spain generating 250 GWh and Portugal 32 GWh. For Portugal, this also represented the second-highest solar production level in its history, just below the record set on May 29, 2026.

Looking ahead to the week of June 8, solar forecasts indicate mixed trends across Europe. According to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, Italy and Spain are expected to see increases in solar generation, while the German market is projected to experience a further decline in photovoltaic output.

At the same time, wind energy production rose significantly across most European markets in the first week of June. France led with a dramatic 151% increase, followed by Portugal with 81% growth and Germany with a 75% rise, marking the second consecutive week of increases for both the Portuguese and German markets. Spain recorded a 37% increase, while Italy saw a more moderate 16% rise in wind generation.

During the week, several markets also reached notable daily wind production milestones. On June 2, Portugal achieved its highest daily wind output in three years, producing 62 GWh, while France set a June record on June 4, reaching 276 GWh in daily wind energy generation.

For the second week of June, forecasts suggest continued divergence in wind energy trends across Europe. AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects increases in Germany and Spain, while France, Portugal, and Italy are projected to experience declines in wind generation, AleaSoft reports.
