CROPEX September power prices rise as traded volumes fall from August

Electricity prices on Croatia’s CROPEX increased in September even though traded volumes were lower than in August. The change lifted wholesale procurement costs while exchange activity stayed above year-earlier levels. CROPEX reporting shows both a decline in monthly turnover versus August and higher volumes compared with September 2025.

Total electricity traded on the exchange reached 1.364 TWh, down 9.9% month on month but up 25% versus September 2025. Trading split into 902.8 GWh in the day-ahead market and 461.1 GWh in intraday trading. Average daily day-ahead turnover was approximately 30.1 GWh.

On pricing, the average day-ahead baseload price rose 14% to €172.80/MWh. The peak-load average increased 15.7% to €143.86/MWh. Peak-load electricity was about €28.94/MWh cheaper than baseload, while the intraday market averaged €175.40/MWh, slightly above the day-ahead baseload level.

CROPEX ownership and market timeline

CROPEX is jointly owned by transmission system operator HOPS and electricity market operator HROTE. Its day-ahead market began operating in 2016, followed by intraday trading in 2017. Coupling through the Croatian-Slovenian border started in 2018.

September’s figures indicate continued growth in exchange activity compared with last year alongside higher prices and lower monthly turnover than in August. The reported data distinguish between market liquidity and the cost of securing electricity through the exchange.
