Croatia’s Trtar-Krtolin wind farm is preparing a repowering project that would raise installed capacity from 11.2 MW to 30 MW. The plans include battery storage alongside the replacement of the existing turbines. Four battery units would provide a combined 10 MW/20 MWh of storage.
The project would replace 14 Enercon E-48 turbines, each rated at 800 kW, with five turbines rated at 6 MW apiece. The battery system is intended to help manage intermittent generation and allow more flexible participation in the electricity market.
Located near Sibenik, the wind farm has operated since 2006 and was Croatia’s second wind farm. Reconstruction is expected to proceed in stages, covering new turbine foundations, electrical connections and communications infrastructure. The project is being developed by Vjetroelektrana Trtar-Krtolin, a subsidiary of German renewable energy developer wpd. Once completed, it would almost triple the site’s installed generating capacity while retaining much of its established grid and energy infrastructure.
