Chinese industrial group SANY has acquired a 153 MW standalone battery-storage project at Borzești, Romania. It bought the project from RNV Infrastructure, part of the Renovatio Group, by acquiring all shares in project company Spark Terminal. The transaction’s financial terms were not disclosed. This is SANY’s first announced standalone battery project in Romania.
SANY entered the Romanian energy market earlier in 2026 and has named the country a priority investment destination. The company’s plans envisage total investment of around €1 billion in renewable energy and storage. The Borzești acquisition adds to a pipeline that also includes hybrid renewable and storage developments.
SANY’s Romanian projects and standalone storage strategy
SANY’s first Romanian development is planned for Dobrești in Dolj county. The company intends to build a 95 MW solar plant alongside 218 MWh of battery storage. The project is ready to move into construction.
The Borzești acquisition extends SANY’s strategy beyond batteries directly linked to renewable generation. A standalone storage asset can draw electricity from the wider grid rather than from a single solar or wind facility. This enables it to respond directly to wholesale prices, grid congestion and balancing requirements.
In Romania, the rapid expansion of variable renewable generation is increasing the value of flexible capacity. The Borzești project gives SANY an additional route into the country’s electricity market. For Romania, the deal is another indication that storage development is shifting from a supporting component of renewable projects towards a distinct investment class with its own potential trading and balancing revenues.
