North Macedonia launches intraday electricity market to deepen integration with European power system

North Macedonia has taken a further step toward closer integration with the European electricity market following the official launch of its intraday electricity trading platform.

The new system allows electricity to be bought and sold during the actual delivery day, giving market participants significantly greater flexibility in managing supply-demand imbalances. Authorities expect the mechanism to improve overall system efficiency, reduce balancing costs, and strengthen real-time control of the national power grid.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski described the launch as evidence that ongoing reforms in the energy sector are beginning to deliver concrete results. He emphasized that energy security and system resilience have become key strategic priorities across Europe, adding that the new market structure will help North Macedonia better respond to price volatility and regional market fluctuations.

Energy Minister Sanja Božinovska stated that the intraday platform represents only one phase of a broader market integration process. She noted that the country plans to continue developing additional trading mechanisms, expand regional electricity cooperation, and gradually move toward participation in European market coupling systems.

The director of MEMO, Zoran Gjorgievski, said the new trading segment introduces real-time market functionality into the Macedonian electricity sector and enhances price transparency through competitive market-based trading. He also warned that upcoming EU climate instruments, including the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), could create additional pressure on domestic producers and potentially impact market liquidity if not implemented in a gradual and balanced way.

The platform was developed by MEMO in cooperation with BSP, using the M7 trading system developed by Deutsche Börse. Officials highlighted that the introduction of intraday trading is expected to improve market efficiency, strengthen regional connectivity, and support North Macedonia’s long-term energy transition and EU integration goals.
