Europe: Electricity demand declines in early April with recovery expected

During the second week of April, electricity demand declined across most major European markets compared to the previous week. The French market experienced the most significant drop at 16%, while Germany recorded the smallest decrease of 3.4%. Belgium, Italy, and Great Britain also saw reductions of 6.9%, 8.2%, and 8.5%, respectively. The impact of the Easter holiday, particularly Easter Monday on April 6, contributed to these decreases. In contrast, demand in the Iberian markets moved in the opposite direction, increasing by 5.4% in Spain and 6.3% in Portugal.

At the same time, average temperatures rose across all analyzed markets. Italy registered the highest increase at 3.1 °C, while Portugal recorded the smallest rise of 0.8 °C. In the remaining markets, temperature increases ranged between 1.0 °C and 2.9 °C.

Looking ahead to the third week of April, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting point to a recovery in electricity demand across all analyzed European markets.
