Europe: Solar and wind output shows mixed trends across key markets in March

During the week of March 16, solar photovoltaic generation increased across most major European markets compared to the previous week. France and Germany recorded the strongest growth, both rising by 35%, thereby reversing the declining trend observed in the prior week. Italy and Spain continued their upward trajectory for a second consecutive week, with output increasing by 6.1% and 6.3%, respectively. In contrast, Portugal experienced a significant decline in solar generation, which fell by 26%.

Several markets also reached notable milestones during the week. Germany and France both set records for solar photovoltaic production in a March period. On March 19, Germany achieved its second-highest daily solar output for the month, reaching 341 GWh. Just one day later, on March 20, France established a new all-time March record with daily production of 141 GWh.

Looking ahead to the week of March 23, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting indicate that solar generation is expected to increase in Italy and Spain, while Germany is likely to see a decline in output.

In terms of wind energy, production increased in the Iberian and Italian markets during the third week of March, following declines in the previous week. Italy experienced the most significant growth, with a sharp increase of 113%, while Spain recorded a more modest rise of 6.2%. Portugal also saw wind generation increase by 14%. Conversely, Germany and France reversed the previous week’s upward trend. Germany registered the largest decrease in wind production at 27%, while France saw a smaller decline of 14%.

For the final week of March, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting projects higher wind generation across the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and Germany. In contrast, France is expected to experience a reduction in wind energy production, Alea Soft reports.
