North Macedonia MEMO day-ahead electricity volumes rise 74% in September

Electricity traded on North Macedonia’s MEMO day-ahead exchange increased 74% year on year to 179.2 GWh in September. The rise coincided with higher September prices, reflecting greater activity on the organised market. Volumes still fell 10.3% from August, while the average clearing price moved up 10% month on month to €150.49/MWh.

Average daily trading reached approximately 5,973 MWh. The reported peak-period average was €121.40/MWh, which was below the overall monthly average. The difference between peak-period and overall pricing points to variation across delivery hours when assessing purchasing costs and generation revenues.

Exchange scale since May 2023

The MEMO exchange was launched in May 2023. In September of the previous year, trading totalled approximately 102.9 GWh, compared with 179.2 GWh in September this year. Higher annual turnover indicates a larger market footprint, while the month-on-month volume decline shows activity remains variable.

For participants, September combined higher trading volumes than a year earlier with a higher average procurement price than in August. The gap between peak-period and overall prices also indicates that monthly baseload averages alone do not fully describe exposure, with the timing of consumption and production remaining relevant to realised costs and returns.
