Greece lifts net power exports 52.83% as prices stay lowest

IENE’s weekly comparison showed Greece’s net electricity exports rose 52.83% to 208.38 GWh in the week to 1 November, while Greece remained the lowest-priced of the seven major regional power markets tracked. Its weekly average day-ahead price reached €255.04/MWh, up €25.62/MWh. That was €32.22/MWh below Romania’s price and €6.72/MWh below Italy’s.

The comparison also recorded a 193.9% increase in Greek wind generation, almost tripling, while solar output fell by 42.2%. Combined wind and solar production rose by 7.2%. Hydropower production declined by 3.80%, while gas-fired generation increased by 13.40%, helping total thermal output rise 10.38%. Electricity demand grew by 1.64%.

Stronger wind and gas-fired generation, alongside higher net exports, pointed to a substantial change in Greece’s regional supply role during the week. Lower Greek prices and higher exports do not guarantee that buyers in neighbouring southeastern European markets can obtain Greek electricity at Greece’s clearing price. Available interconnector capacity and hourly price formation affect access. Traders use Greece’s price discount to assess whether supply from the south can ease higher-priced markets to the north and west.
